The main competitions for digital images, colour prints and monochrome prints are run throughout the year (as shown in the programme).

The Marshall Trophy is presented for the digital image competition. There are two rounds, each with two sections, one with a named theme and one open (any subject). Judging is external. Themes for 2011/12 are:
- Round 1 - Nightlife; Round 2 - Still Life.

The Carlogie Cup is awarded for the best set of six digital images (all open, no theme) any of which may be from any other competition. Externally judged in March.
The President's Plate is awarded to the club member with the highest points total from the above competitions who has not won one of the trophies.
The Andy Hanson Trophy is presented for the best set of three Natural History digital images. In-house judging in January/February.
Competition small print
File names for digital image competition entries should contain membership number and title ONLY (for example: 99 Image Title). Images should not be modified using software other than to crop and realign; adjust levels and saturation; sharpen and remove sensor dust. The Projected Images page provides information about optimum size for projection.
Print entries should be a maximum size of 40cm x 50cm including the mount. The title and membership number should be written on the back. Two or more prints in a single mount will be judged as a single print.
For each competition round members may enter up to two digital images and two colour prints per section (themed and open) and two monochrome prints. The scores from both images in each round to count.
Images should be recent (not more than 3 years old) and the same image should not be re-entered for the same competition.
Old images may be manipulated to make a new digital image (subject to the limitations noted above) or a new print.
All competition entries must be anonymous.
